What must I do to be saved?

  • Becoming a Christian begins with recognizing that God has a law of righteous and standards that you have broken by nature and choice. Think of it this way, have you ever lied (even once – fibs, white lies, etc.)? Ever stolen anything (the value is irrelevant)? Jesus said,“Whoever looks upon a woman to lust after her, has committed adultery already with her in his heart.” Have you ever looked with lust? Did you say “Yes” to any of these?
  • Because you have broken God’s law, you are deserving of eternal punishment of Hell. No one is exempt from eternal damnation according to their own goodness. The Bible says that “all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23). Nothing is hidden from His holy eyes. Will you be innocent or guilty on the Day of Judgment?
  • Now you have to realize and believe that God has provided a way of escape from Hell because He is full of love and compassion toward man. The way of escape is through God’s only Son, Jesus Christ. Jesus came to the earth through the birth of a virgin, lived a perfect and sinless life, shed His blood by dying on a cross, was raised from the dead, and ascended back into heaven. The blood that Jesus shed washes away all of our sins, if you will “confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead” (Romans 10:9).
  • Begin to listen. You know that you will be guilty, and therefore will end up in Hell if you deny Jesus Christ. A death of eternal punishment and damnation is not God’s will. He provided a way for you to be forgiven. He sent His Son Jesus to take your punishment: “God commended His love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.” He is your “one way” to Heaven. Jesus said, “I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man comes to the Father, but by me.” John 14:6
  • * If you have realized the truth that you need in your life, the next step seems very difficult, but it is the simplest and greatest step you will ever take. In order to become a Follower of Jesus you must begin to live out your faith through a lifestyle of obedience to God’s word. Your good works during your lifetime does not grant anyone access into heaven, but our actions let us know if we truly believe or not. The Bible says, “Faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead” (James 2:17).
  • You must admit that you are a sinner in need of a savior and begin the process of repentance. Begin the admission of you life as a sinner and the need of salvation through the blood of Jesus in your life. Now here comes the part that many fail to understand. Because you have repented and accepted Jesus as your Savior, your life does not solely include turning to Jesus, but also turning from sin. A true follower of Christ will strive to live free from habitual sin and wickedness. Being a Christian does not mean a one time experience during Sunday school, Revival, Vacation Bible School, or at a church altar. It includes a lifetime of holding to faith in Jesus and walking in obedience. Jesus said, “He who endures to the end will be saved” (Matthew 10:22).

What to Pray
God, I am a sinner and need forgiveness. I believe that Jesus Christ shed His precious blood and died for my sins. I am now willing to turn from my sin and invite Jesus Christ to come into my heart and life as my personal Lord and Savior. Amen!

“A Word of Encouragement”
If you trusted Jesus as your Savior you have begun a wonderful new life with Him. Read your Bible and obey what you read, talk to God in prayer every day, and get involved in a church where Christ is preached and the Bible is the final word.
